In this project case study, I will be sharing my experience designing a mobile app for a coffee shop in Toledo, OH. The goal was to create an app that made it easy for users to place online orders in advance, minimizing the customer's wait time and maximizing convenience.
Throughout the design process, I focused on creating an intuitive user interface that would enhance the overall user experience and encourage engagement with the app.

Process
Breaking down the project
As a coffee lover and designer, I've always been interested in how design can enhance everyday activities. My friend owns a thriving coffee shop called Rustbelt, and I wanted to use this opportunity to create something that could enhance the ordering experience for their customers. The challenge was to create a mobile app that made ordering fast and easy, while maintaining their brand identity. I started by learning how both customers and staff interact with the current system to identify where things could be improved.
Designing with Purpose
I created user personas and journey maps to pinpoint key interactions, then built wireframes to shape the app's structure. From there I moved into high-fidelity designs that prioritized usability, clarity, and Rustbelt's aesthetic. I included features such as favorite orders, featured menu items, and drink customization.
Refining through feedback
Usability testing helped reveal small but meaningful tweaks like improving the order confirmation page, and an option to continue as a guest for those that didn't want to set up an account. Hearing from both customers and baristas helped me refine the experience into something more efficient. The final product provides a smoother workflow for staff and also gives users a way to order coffee that feels just as personal as ordering in person.
Takeaways
This project reminded me how much impact thoughtful design can have on everyday experiences. Working on Rustbelt's app showed me the value of designing with both users and business owners in mind. In the end, the app makes it easier for customers to order and enjoy their coffee, while helping the shop run more smoothly behind the scenes.
